All at sea

Awake to a clear day. After sailing all night we are nearly at the northern end of Vancouver Island. Two Canadian pilots have steered the ship through this section of the inner passage overnight and we are being accompanied by a yellow pilot boat as they are about to hand control back to the captain

Vera has had a lot of sleep, and feels much better. Her tummy is gripped by feelings of pain: is it simply hunger or the continuation of her illness?

We go along to one of the restaurants for breakfast. My approach to food poisoning is to not eat for 24 hours since last being sick. Vera's approach is to let her body decide and tell her if it can face food. So I am uncertain as to what will be the outcome of her eating a little breakfast

We return to the room afterwards and Vera crashes back to bed and falls back asleep. But not for long as Randy, our cleaner, arrives to make the bed and sort the room out. He is from the Philippines and has been working his way up from hotels, through posh hotels, and onto cruise ships for 20 years. Money goes back home to help with medical expenses for his parents

We then wander round the ship and book ourselves onto a cookery course on Alaskan salmon in a few days time

We then settle into the Observation Lounge for games of rummikub and cribbage. What to observe? Not much, it is raining and visibility is 250m

We have a light lunch of bread with meats and cheeses. Vera seems to have made the right call in resuming food earlier

There is a talk in the afternoon about the future of the Alaskan economy. Oil income is falling and money from previous oil sales is given back in cash to the population rather than investing in a more diverse economy. They are hoping that this will carry on for ever as new fields are developed. It seems somewhat naive

Back to the Observation Lounge, where there is now more to oberve

for more cribbage. Vera wins, narrowly

A slot in one of the restaurants has become free at the last minute and we have a short time to get changed and along to the venue. We are 10 minutes late as Vera is constantly stopped, mainly by staff, to compliment her on her sari

The food is very good
